About

Solvay SA is a Brussels-headquartered global chemical pioneer, operating the historic La Rochelle rare earth processing facility in Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France. Established in 1948, the 40-hectare industrial complex stands as the largest operational rare earth separation plant outside of China, and the only industrial-scale facility in Europe equipped to separate both light and heavy rare earth fractions. Historically focused on catalysis, semiconductor polishing, and automotive emissions control, Solvay executed a massive strategic expansion, culminating in the official commercial inauguration of a dedicated permanent magnet rare earths production line at La Rochelle. This upgrade directly supports the European Union's Critical Raw Materials Act mandates by targeting up to 30 per cent of Europe's domestic permanent magnet material demand by 2030.

Upstream Sourcing and Circular Frameworks

To sustain La Rochelle's advanced midstream hydrometallurgical throughput, Solvay has actively constructed an alternative, non-aligned sourcing corridor using both primary mined feedstock and circular recycled streams. In June 2026, Solvay formalised a structural supply agreement with Viridis Mining and Minerals to secure long-term mixed rare earth carbonate (MREC) feedstock from the Colossus ionic clay project in Brazil, targeting production by 2028. This upstream integration is balanced by circular economies, including a binding supply architecture with Canadian clean-tech developer Cyclic Materials to process recycled mixed rare earth oxides (rMREO). These diversified arrangements ensure a secure, look-through supply of high-purity Neodymium, Praseodymium, Dysprosium, and Terbium oxides for European electric vehicle (EV) drivetrains and wind turbine applications.

Environmental Engineering and Process Upgrades

In tandem with its capacity upgrades, Solvay has heavily retrofitted the La Rochelle operations to comply with strict European environmental frameworks and corporate ESG targets. The specialised hydrometallurgical chemical separation circuits have been re-engineered to achieve a 40 per cent absolute reduction in carbon dioxide emissions alongside halving net water consumption at the facility. By leveraging over 75 years of chemical purification and finishing expertise, the plant produces market-ready separated oxides while maintaining a completely transparent tracking trail, directly answering upcoming regulatory requirements like the EU Digital Product Passports.
