Monazite is a reddish-brown phosphate mineral containing rare earth metals. It occurs in both hard rock deposits and mineral sands. It often contains significant thorium, which presents radiological handling challenges but is a very rich source of LREEs and some HREEs.

Processing & Metallurgy
Due to the phosphate matrix and radioactive thorium content, processing requires aggressive cracking (often alkali or acid bake at high temperatures) and careful radioactive waste management.
