UC RUSAL is the world's second-largest aluminium producer and the leading non-Chinese producer of scandium. As a byproduct of Bayer process alumina refining at its Achinsk and Boguchansk alumina refineries in Siberia, RUSAL recovers scandium from the red mud (bauxite residue) waste stream. The company markets high-purity scandium oxide (99.9% ScO3) to aerospace alloy producers, SOFC manufacturers, and the sports equipment sector. RUSAL's scandium production from red mud represents the most commercially mature bauxite-residue Sc recovery operation globally, producing an estimated 10-15 tonnes of ScO3 per year from alumina refinery effluents. This positions RUSAL as a critical Western supply chain option for scandium, particularly relevant since the geopolitical disruptions of 2022-2026.
