Rare Earth Mining Project
UC RUSAL's Achinsk Alumina Refinery in Krasnoyarsk Krai, Siberia, is one of Russia's largest alumina plants, processing bauxite from the Kia-Shaltyr mine. As part of its Bayer-process alumina production, RUSAL recovers scandium oxide from the red mud (bauxite residue) waste stream using a solvent extraction circuit. The Achinsk operation produces approximately 10-15 tonnes of high-purity ScO3 per year, making UC RUSAL the world's leading non-Chinese scandium producer by volume. Scandium is sold to aerospace aluminium alloy producers (Al-Sc alloys enable significant weight and strength improvements) and solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) manufacturers. This represents the most commercially mature demonstration of circular REE recovery from aluminium industry waste.
