Scandium metal is alloyed with aluminum to produce ultra-lightweight, high-strength aerospace structural materials. It is also used as a solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) electrolyte additive. Scandium is one of the most expensive rare earth metals by mass, often trading above $2,000/kg.
